"The sheep industry as an enormous opportunity for productivity gain because of the measurable variation within a flock. While large differences exist between the top 25% and bottom 25% of animals in fleece weight, fibre diameter, growth rate and reproduction, the differences in dollar value can be extreme - 3 to 5 times between the upper and lower quartiles'

"A pickup in European buyer activity, coupled with a market decline in wool offered at auction has seen prices surge over the past few months, with the eastern market indicator well and truly breaking through the AUD 10/KG level. The Rebobank reports show that the supply side constraints are expected to support prices in 2011, particularly for the fine and superfine wool."

RFID PRECISION MANAGEMENT.

Precision management using RFID tags within sheep breeding programs is allowing for accelerated gains to be made through full performance recording of individual animals. This includes lamb growth rates, wool tests and full pedigree at higher accuracies and reduced cost to previous methods.

Precision Pays by Australian Sheep CRC

Precision management can significantly lift productivity rates by identifying individual animals within a flock. By identifying animals with superior performance for a nucleous breeding program, and returning lower performing animals to the commercial flock, a significant gain in genetics is achievable in onfarm situations.

PRODUCTION INDEXING

Accurate recording of individual animal performance allows the production of indexing figures. These figures represent an animals performance ranked against industry benchmarks. By selecting animals at the top of Australia's merino flock, the BRALCA stud is realising exceptional production figures. Matched with a planned breeding program, these genetics are then stabalised across a larger flock of 'Next Generation' sheep

These index figures are of particular interest when selecting breeding animals for specific programs.

GRAZING MANAGEMENT

By using planned grazing management on native and improved pastures, we are improving our operation with minimal inputs. We have set our system up to maximise use of our 'solar' panels contained within the leaves of pasture and shrub plants for consumption by our profit center - the sheep enterprise.

Grazing control
  • Optimising plant growth
  • Greater diversity of plant species
  • Improved pasture utilisation
